Anybody have any experience with Innova EVO and pancreatic disorders?

My 2 year old German Shepherd has recently been diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. We’ve started giving him enzymes to treat the problem, but are struggling a bit with dry food choices. We had been transitioning him to a raw food diet, but now are worried about continuing, knowing that he has severe digestive issues and food limitations.

The vet recommended Hill’s Prescription Diet, but there is no way we’re feeding him anything with various forms of corn and by-products as the first 4 ingredients. We have been looking at other foods and the best alternative seems to be Innova EVO Reduced Fat with 2.5% fiber and 15% fat. However, the fat is still a bit higher than we’d like (ideal for EPI is 12% or lower).

Anyone have any experience with EPI? What do you feed your dog?
Thanks for all the great answers so far! I know we had considered Wellness Core as an option, as well. The Innova is slightly too high fiber for an EPI diet, as far as we could tell (but we’re not experts). And, I’ll be honest, in all my searching, I had never heard of Orijen. Thanks guys and keep it coming. :)

Hi, you might want to join this yahoo group, it’s for people who have dogs with EPI. You’ll find a lot of information there as far as food choices–Good luck!

You should feed your dog what a VETERINARIAN suggests in your dog’s case. Try a second opinion if you don’t like the first.

~ I would agree and would never feed SD to any dog, know matter what the vet said. Majority of vets are useless when it comes to nutrition.

Have you thought about doing the Innova (same company as EVO) except it has grains. It has a reduced fat formula that is excellent with only 8.2% and good fiber.

    Here is the site.

This is what I would feel comfortable doing. It is a very quality food, no recalls, and excellent ingredients.

Also, I just looked up and Wellness has a grain free diet called Wellness Core. They have a grain free reduced fat that is only 8%. I would also check this one out.

    Good luck!

    >>I to prefer Orijen to Innova but Orijen does not have a reduced fat food.

I found EVO too rich for my bichon. She actually got constipated really badly and stopped eating - I rushed her over to the vet on the second day she stopped eating (which is equivalent to 3 meals in her feeding schedule) and she had to do 2 weeks of fibre formula wet food to clean her out. Fortunately she took to it…she knew the EVO was making her feel bad!

A friendly independently-owned petstore owner told me about Orijen after I wandered into her store. She said she’d noticed the quality of EVO to decline and recommended Orijen: http://www.orijen.ca/orijen/orijen/

I’m in Canada, but the prices for EVO and Orijen worked out to be about the same. So I switched my bichon to Orijen. That was almost 3 years ago, and she still relishes every crumb without a bowel problem.
